Sugar Skulls

On Thursday, the whole year level of 5/6 were drawing and creating their own sugar skulls. A sugar skull is a plain skull that is painted with bright vibrant colours, that are supposed to celebrate the day of the dead. This is the day when the people of Mexico celebrate the people they have lost but instead of thinking of it in a sad way, they celebrate that they have lived. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on the 31st of October.

 

Term 3: Week 6 Reflection

This week we did lots of things! For maths, the class did rounding off. I was doing a worksheet on rounding off and I learnt that whenever a number is higher than 4, round it to the nearest ten and when it’s 4 or lower, it will remain the previous number.

The 5/6’s started reading a picture story book called ‘The Stone Lion‘, by Margaret Wild. It’s about a stone lion who was selfish and in a lonely world. After reading the story, I learnt that you should do a good deed to feel good about your self. I would recommend this book to a middle aged group (8-10 yrs old). If you like books with a moral behind it, this would be a good picture story book.

Term 3: Week 5

This week was really great! We revised a few things on commas.The class were given a worksheet, that had a piece of writing about a lady’s day. We had to put the commas in the sentences, in a place that we thought was suitable. I learnt that commas are used to add a pause to a long sentence and help separate words while listing.


We also had a few visitors from the Hawthorn Football club. There were 2 players who told us about there diets and fitness. I learnt that you need to maintain a healthy body to have a healthy mind and life.


 

          

 

Term 3: Week 4 Reflection

This week was really fun! We focused on decimals and verbs. I learnt that to make a sentence more interesting try to add a subordinate clause. A subordinate clause is another sentence that has continued from a main clause. For example:

“I went to the park” = Main clause.

“I went to the park – so I could enjoy the fresh breeze”= Subordinate clause.


 

The year 5/6 level revised decimals. We were taught about the decimal place value chart and how you can pronounce a decimal as a fraction. I learnt that you need to say the digit not the name.

 

Term 3: Week 3 Reflection

This week was really fun! We had a special celebration called Italian Day. We were placed in groups. I had a pizza and when my teacher placed the slice in the bag, it slipped out on my hand! Luckily it didn’t stain my white t-shirt.

 

Year 5/6 Level were focusing on Chance and Data. The classes played maths games called beetle and first to 100. It took  me 48 rolls to complete my whole beetle. That’s a lot of rolls! Overall I really liked this week and I learnt that there’s a 1 in 6 chance that you will roll any number on a die.

Term 3: Week 2 Reflection

Hi everyone, for this week’s reflection I did many things. My highlight of the week would have to be the Emmaus Production, ‘ Beauty and the Beast’. The 5/6 level were invited to watch the production. Just by watching the production, I knew how much effort and teamwork was put in it. My favourite part was when all the dancers, cutlery and kitchen equipment came out and sang. Overall I would rate this a 9 out of 10.

Another one of my learnings was the AFL Gala day. To be honest, I really enjoyed it! We had 2 people come to coach us. Their names were Sean and Adam. I learnt football skills such as, short length kicks, how to bounce a football and what position you should kick the ball.  I found it hard to bounce the ball because every time I tried, the football would end up a metre forward! I noticed that when you kick the ball you need to make sure that you control your strength from your foot and make sure it goes to the direction you want it to go. Thanks for reading bye!

Term 3: Week 1 Reflection

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t posted much on my Blog  in a while, but I’ve got another post for you.  At our school, both grade 5/6’s have been set a task to reflect on their week. In this week we’ve done many things such as fractions of collections and  optical illusion art.

For this weeks maths, our main topic was about ‘Fractions of Collections’. This is what I understand about Fractions of collections. I understand that  you need to know your factors and fractions.  You need to know the formula for Fractions of Collections.


 

Formula:

  1. Divide the Denominator by the whole.
  2. Then multiply the Numerator
  3. Then subtract the whole number by the answer
  4. Then you’ve got your answer!
  5. But remember Practice makes Perfect…

 

e.g Max spent 2/8 of 1200. How much does he have left?

  1. (1200  8) x2=
  2. 1200  8=150
  3. 150 x 2= 300
  4. 1200-300= 900
  5. Answer: 900

Now I’ve got to take some money to Sweden so I can buy some gifts for family and friends. Sweden’s currency is called ‘Swedish krona’. This is what their notes look like:

Where Will I stay?

I’ll stay at the Tree Hotel. It’s $730 a night (converted in Australian Dollars).

Connect Four History!

Connect Four is a well known game that people like to play in their free time or when ever they just need to play a fun game. It involves a lot of thinking and strategy. Connect Four was created by two men named Howard Wexler and Ned Strongin. The genre of Connect Four is abstract and strategy.

The game was published in the year  1974.  The publishers of Connect Four were the companies Hasbro / Milton Bradley. The amount of players for this game should be 2 players.  The age range is around  6 years and up. Connect Four normally goes for 2-6 minutes when playing.  The main aim to winning Connect Four is that you must use your counters to get a four in a row or in any direction.  You place the counters in a 6×7 grid. Week 3: Using images Fairly.

Hi guys today I’m going to tell you what I learnt from watching the ” copy- writing” video!

While watching the video, I learnt that you need to have permission to use a photo. If you don’t ask, it’s illegal and that it applies to all images. You have to negotiate with the owner of the photo and you must write the reference.I also learnt the words attribution and licence.
